Cross-border influencer marketing

MVP (Mega Volume Production, 十方众声) has run cross-border influencer marketing since 2023, in both directions: it connects North American brands with creators in mainland China and Asia, and Chinese brands with Chinese-speaking creators in North America, and runs creator campaigns inside China too. One MVP team finds and vets creators, negotiates, reviews content and its ad disclosure, and reports results against platform data.

What does MVP do as a cross-border influencer marketing agency?

MVP finds the right creators for a brand, closes the deal and stays with the campaign through posting and the review afterwards. It works in both directions: North American brands looking for creators in mainland China and Asia, and Chinese brands looking for Chinese-speaking creators in North America. MVP has done this work in North America since 2023, and it also runs creator campaigns for brands inside China. For the terms, see the glossary entries KOL and influencer.

The work is split like this:

  • What MVP does: finds creators who fit your product and market, checks their account data, writes the brief, negotiates fees and schedules, reviews content and its ad disclosure before it goes live, and reports the results to you.
  • What the creator does: makes and posts the content to the agreed brief.
  • What you do: explain the product, the target market and what must not be said, ship samples on schedule, and approve the creators and the final content.

A creator MVP represents takes part only with that creator’s consent. MVP does not name the brands or creators it has worked with and publishes no case studies; see confidentiality.

Fees, eligibility and other questions common to all brand work are answered once, in the brand marketing FAQ.

Which brands work with MVP on influencer marketing?

MVP mainly works with two kinds of brand: North American brands entering China that need Chinese creators, and Chinese brands entering North America that need Chinese-speaking creators there. Brands that only want creators inside China can get in touch too. If you also need ads on Chinese platforms, a Chinese press release, or ads on Western platforms, see the two services below.

Which creators can North American and Chinese brands reach through MVP?

MVP connects North American brands with creators in mainland China and Asia, Chinese brands with Chinese-speaking creators in North America, and brands already in China with creators on Chinese platforms. In keeping with its confidentiality, this page names kinds of creator and platforms, never people.

  • North American brands: creators in mainland China and Asia

Chinese-language creators on Douyin, Xiaohongshu (RedNote), Weibo, Bilibili and WeChat, who explain your product to Chinese consumers, what Chinese marketers call zhongcao (seeding). Most deals in China are booked and settled through the platforms’ own creator marketplaces, such as Ocean Engine Xingtu (巨量星图), Xiaohongshu Pugongying (蒲公英), Tencent Marketing Huxuan (互选), Weibo Weirenwu (微任务) and Bilibili Huahuo (花火); their rules are on the platforms page. For ads and Chinese press releases as well, see China entry: PR and social ads.

  • Chinese brands: Chinese-speaking creators in North America

Chinese-speaking creators living in North America who post on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, in Chinese, English or both. The official brand-deal platforms there are TikTok One, Meta Creator Marketing Hub and YouTube Creator Partnerships; their rules are on the platforms page. For ads on Western platforms as well, see Going global: social ads.

  • Creator campaigns inside China

Brands already selling in China can run creator campaigns there alone. The platforms and marketplaces are those in the first item, and the selection, negotiation, review and reporting work the same way as across borders.

What does cross-border influencer marketing include?

MVP’s cross-border influencer marketing has five parts, from finding creators to the review after the campaign.

  • Finding and vetting creators

MVP draws up a shortlist from your product, market and budget, then checks whether the account data is real: the platform back end counts and screenshots are reference only (see which data to trust); how to spot inflated followings is under how to tell whether followers are real and the glossary entry audience quality.

  • Briefs and negotiation

MVP turns your requirements into the creator brief: the points to make, what must not be said, the format and the schedule. It then negotiates the fee, the rounds of revision and where the content may be used. A brief going to creators in another market has to be rewritten; what changes is in the next section.

  • Content review and ad disclosure

Before anything goes live, MVP checks it against the brief and the rules where it will run: whether any product claim goes too far, and whether the sponsored post is labeled as the rules require. The labeling rules for China, the US and Canada are in the three-country table; the terms are explained under material connection and sponsored-deal registration.

  • Paid amplification

Content that performs well can be boosted with the creator’s permission: in China with boost tools such as DOU+ and Xiaohongshu Shutiao, in North America with TikTok Spark Ads and Instagram partnership ads; the tools are listed under platforms and tools. What the contract must say when a creator’s content runs as an ad is under contract points for running a creator’s post as an ad.

  • Data and review

After posting, MVP pulls reach, engagement and conversion data from the platform back ends, compares it with the goals set before launch, and reports to you; the results inform the next round of creator selection and pricing.

What has to change when one brief goes to creators in China and in North America?

When MVP adapts a brief for creators in the other market, at least five things change: where the deal is booked, how the ad is labeled, what may be said about the product, whether the creator must have used it, and whether the content may be run as an ad. A brand working with creators in both markets should plan for all five from the start.

  • Where the deal is booked

Each market books deals through different marketplaces, and the brand needs an account ready on the right one. In China most creator deals are booked through the platform’s own marketplace; to book on Xiaohongshu’s Pugongying, for example, a brand first verifies its company, as the platforms page sets out. The North American counterparts are TikTok One, Meta Creator Marketing Hub and YouTube Creator Partnerships. TikTok One is where advertisers find creators, produce videos and analyze ad performance;1 the rules for the other two are on the platforms page. What these marketplaces have in common is in the glossary entry creator marketplace.

  • How the ad is labeled

Both markets require viewers to see at once that a post is an ad, but the wording differs: China requires the label 广告 (“advertisement”), while North America requires the relationship between creator and brand to be disclosed; the rules are in the three-country table. The brief should also name the platform’s own disclosure tool. On YouTube, for example, a creator ticks Paid Promotion in YouTube Studio and a disclosure label appears at the start of the video; YouTube adds that creators and their partners are each responsible for meeting the legal requirements.2

  • What may be said about the product

In China, advertisements may not use words such as “national level”, “highest level” or “best” (Advertising Law, Article 9(3)), and advertisements for medical treatment, drugs, medical devices, health foods and some other categories must pass review by the advertising review authority before they run (Article 46).3 Taglines that work in North America have to be checked against these rules before they are translated into a Chinese brief.

  • Whether the creator must have used the product

China’s Advertising Law says an endorser may not recommend or vouch for goods they have not used or services they have not received (Article 38).3 A creator who recommends a product in their own name may be treated as an endorser, so a campaign with Chinese creators has to schedule time for samples and trial use; samples sent across the border also need time for shipping and customs.

  • Whether the content may run as an ad

If a brand wants to run a creator’s content as ads, the brief and the contract must say in advance where, for how long and under what permission; ads run inside a platform also go through that platform’s own authorization. The contract points are under contract points for running a creator’s post as an ad.

How does a cross-border creator campaign run?

MVP’s cross-border creator campaigns run in five steps, from your request to the review after the campaign.

  1. Send your request

On the contact page, choose the brand option that describes you and set out the product, the target market, the kind of creator you want and a rough budget.

  2. Scoping and quote

You and MVP agree the goals, platforms and timing, and MVP sends a proposal and a quote based on what you need.

  3. Creator selection and contract

MVP proposes creators with their data and you approve the selection; a creator MVP represents takes part only with their consent. The contract follows; which company signs it depends on where the business is, as set out in the FAQ.

  4. Production and posting

The creator makes the content to the brief. Before posting, MVP checks it against the brief and the rules where it will run, and it goes live once you approve; any paid boost runs as agreed.

  5. Review

MVP pulls the data from the platform back ends, reports it against the goals set before launch, and recommends what to do in the next round.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brand ask for a specific creator?

Yes, you can name the creators you would like. A creator MVP represents is approached only with their consent; any other creator is contacted by MVP, and a quote follows only if they are interested. MVP does not publish who it represents and will not confirm whether a particular creator is one of them.

How do I find Chinese-speaking influencers in the US or Canada for my brand?

Start by sending a request through the contact page: under “Which describes you”, choose “Brand looking for creators to work with” (or “Chinese company or brand going overseas” if you also want ads or press releases abroad), and state the product, the audience you want and your budget. MVP does not hand out creator lists; it proposes creators for your brief. You can also search yourself on official marketplaces such as TikTok One and Meta Creator Marketing Hub; see the platforms page.

How is booking creators yourself on Pugongying or TikTok One different from working through MVP?

The difference is who does the cross-market work. An official marketplace handles finding, booking and paying creators; MVP selects creators for each market, checks their data, rewrites the brief, negotiates, reviews content and its ad disclosure, and reviews results from both markets together. Deals that can be booked through an official marketplace are still booked there.

What data does a brand get after a creator posts?

You get the platform’s own post-campaign data and MVP’s review. Each platform reports different measures: Xingtu, for example, groups post-campaign results into five sets covering reach, search, conversion, audience assets and viewer profile;4 TikTok One also lets advertisers analyze ad performance.5 Which figures to track can be agreed in the proposal in advance.
