# What is a head influencer?

> A head influencer is a creator or public figure whose influence and commercial value rank at the head of their field or platform, in the Chinese industry's head, waist and tail tiers. Unlike "mega influencer", usually meaning one million-plus followers, the head tier is relative, not a follower count.

The Chinese industry term is 头部 IP (tóubù IP, "head IP") or 头部网红 (tóubù wǎnghóng, "head influencer"), set against 腰部 (yāobù, "waist") and 尾部 (wěibù, "tail"). It applies to creators, celebrities and founders alike.

## What are the influencer tiers?

Influencer tiers group creators by size: Western marketing usually sorts them by follower count (nano, micro, mid-tier, macro, mega), while the Chinese industry ranks them by relative position (head, waist and tail).

No official body sets the follower bands, and published sources draw them differently:

| Tier | [Influencer Marketing Hub](https://influencermarketinghub.com/types-of-influencers/) | [The Shelf](https://www.theshelf.com/the-blog/influencer-tiers/) |
|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1K–10K followers | 1K–5K |
| Micro | 10K–100K | 5K–50K |
| Mid-tier | — | 50K–300K |
| Macro | 100K–1M | 300K–1M |
| Mega | More than 1 million | More than 1 million |

The Chinese tiers are relative to a field or platform:

| Tier | Features | Typical needs |
|---|---|---|
| Head (头部) | Few in number; influence and commercial value concentrate here | Privacy and confidentiality, risk management, high-level partnerships, long-term planning |
| Waist (腰部) | Stable audience and brand work, still room to grow | Professional operations, better commercial returns, a route to the top |
| Tail (尾部) | Many accounts, limited influence | A clear position and a steady content engine |

Because the Chinese tiers are relative, a mega influencer by follower count can be waist-tier on a very large platform, while someone with far fewer followers can be head-tier in a specialist field. Tiers also move: a head-tier figure can slip after a scandal or a long pause, and a waist-tier creator can rise after repositioning.

## How do you tell whether an influencer is in the head tier?

Judge five things together: audience size and quality, reach across platforms, the level of commercial partners, recognition outside the platform, and staying power. Follower count alone is unreliable.

| Dimension | What to look at | Why follower count is not enough |
|---|---|---|
| Audience size and quality | Followers, activity, fit between audience and field | Followers can be inactive or unrelated to the field |
| Reach across platforms | A stable audience on more than one platform | The head of one platform is not the head of every platform |
| Level of commercial partners | Which brands, and one-off posts or long-term endorsements | Two accounts with the same following can differ widely in value |
| Recognition beyond the platform | Press coverage, industry standing, public name recognition | Known in a niche is not known to the public |
| Staying power | How long the influence has lasted, and whether it rests on one event | A viral spike is not the head tier |

## Are head, mega and celebrity influencers the same thing?

No: the three terms overlap but measure different things. "Mega influencer" is a follower-count band; "celebrity influencer" usually means someone famous offline first who also has a large social following; "head" is a relative ranking by influence and commercial value.

Chinese has two further terms: 超级 IP (chāojí IP, "super IP") stresses influence and commercial development across fields and media, and 顶流 (dǐngliú, "top traffic") is entertainment slang for an artist or influencer whose attention is at its peak. All of these describe a state that changes, not a fixed status. Higher attention also means higher exposure, so privacy, confidentiality and crisis readiness matter more at the top.
