In Chinese and wider Asian marketing, KOL is the standard word for the people brands work with to reach an audience. The Chinese term is 关键意见领袖 (guānjiàn yìjiàn lǐngxiù). In other fields KOL means something else: in pharmaceuticals it usually means a physician whose views influence other doctors, and in crypto an account that comments on or promotes projects. This entry covers the marketing sense.

The idea of the opinion leader comes from communication research. The two-step flow model, first described in a study of the 1940 US presidential election and developed in the 1955 book *Personal Influence*, held that media messages often reach opinion leaders first and spread from them to everyone else ([Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/two-step-flow-model-of-communication)).

## KOL vs KOC vs KOS: what is the difference?

The difference is who they are and how they influence: a KOL is an expert or high-reach figure, a KOC is a consumer who shares real experience, and a KOS is a salesperson or brand employee who creates content.

| | KOL | KOC | KOS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Key opinion leader | Key opinion consumer | Key opinion sales |
| Chinese | 关键意见领袖 | 关键意见消费者 | 关键意见销售 |
| Who | Field experts and high-reach creators | Consumers with some influence over peers | A brand's sales advisers, store staff and product specialists |
| Source of influence | Expertise and recognition | Being like the ordinary user | Product knowledge and one-to-one service |
| Typical use | Awareness, launches, backing a point of view | Word of mouth, reviews, usage posts | Leads, store visits, closing sales |
| Cost pattern | High fee per collaboration | Low cost each, used in numbers | Mainly staff time and internal incentives |

KOC and KOS are industry terms with no official definition; the table reflects common usage in Chinese marketing. KOS accounts are one form of company-owned content, covered under [Brand IP](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/corporate-ip).

## What is the difference between a KOL and an influencer?

A KOL is defined by authority in a field, an influencer by the size and engagement of a social media audience; the two often overlap but are not the same.

A doctor whose views shape how colleagues treat patients is a KOL without being an influencer. A lifestyle creator with millions of followers is an influencer but is not necessarily treated as an expert in anything. In Chinese marketing, KOL is often used loosely for any creator a brand pays, which is why English-language briefs about China say "KOL" where a Western brief would say "influencer". How an influencer differs from a celebrity, a content creator and a streamer is explained under [Influencer](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/influencer).

## What is KOL marketing?

KOL marketing is a brand working with KOLs to promote a product or the brand itself, through sponsored content, livestream selling, reviews and usage posts, events and endorsements.

In mainland China it has two legal edges:

- **Endorser duties.** The Advertising Law treats anyone other than the advertiser who recommends or vouches for a product in their own name or image in an advertisement as an advertising endorser (Article 2). Endorsements must be based on fact, and endorsers may not recommend goods they have not used or services they have not received (Article 38).[^1]
- **Labeling.** Under the [Measures for the Administration of Internet Advertising](https://www.gov.cn/zhengce/202305/content_6858084.htm) (Article 9), content that promotes goods or services through knowledge-sharing, experience-sharing or reviews and carries a purchase link must be clearly labeled as an advertisement.

Seen from the KOL's side, the same activity is income; how disclosure rules compare between the US and China is covered under [Creator monetization](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/ip-commercialization).
