# What is brand IP (corporate IP)?

> Brand IP, also called corporate IP, is a personified company asset, such as a founder, a character or a content series, that audiences follow over time. A brand is an identity and promise; brand IP is how it gets told.

In Chinese marketing, 企业 IP (qǐyè IP, "corporate IP") or 品牌 IP (pǐnpái IP, "brand IP") means the personified face of a company in content. It is not the company's IP address, and not its portfolio of patents and trademarks, which is what "corporate IP" usually means in English.

## What forms can brand IP take?

Brand IP commonly takes four forms: a founder brand, a network of executive and employee accounts, a brand character, and a branded content series.

| Form | Who or what carries it | What it is good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Founder brand | The founder or controlling executive | Trust in the brand, fundraising, hiring | Tied to one person's reputation; see [Founder brand](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/founder-ip) |
| Executive and employee accounts | Executives, specialists, sales advisers (KOS) | Professional trust, leads, conversion | Who keeps the account and audience when an employee leaves; compliance of what employees say |
| Brand character | A mascot, cartoon character or virtual human | Long-term recognition, licensing, merchandise | Needs a steady flow of content; AI-generated characters and content must be labeled |
| Branded content series | A regular show, column or series | Steady reach and brand awareness | Needs reliable production capacity |

KOS (key opinion sales) is explained under [KOL](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/kol). In mainland China, AI-generated images, video and other content must carry labels under the [Measures for Labeling AI-Generated Synthetic Content](https://www.cac.gov.cn/2025-03/14/c_1743654684782215.htm), in force since September 1, 2025.

## What is brand personification?

Brand personification is giving a brand a stable personality, set of values and way of speaking, so that people can describe it the way they would describe a person.

It is the groundwork of brand IP. The personality can be carried by the founder, by employees or by a character, or simply by the tone, topics and replies of the brand's own accounts. Academic marketing research uses the related term "brand anthropomorphism". Once set, the personality has to stay consistent across every channel; otherwise audiences meet several different "people".

## How is brand IP different from the brand itself?

A brand answers "who are you and what do you promise?"; brand IP answers "why would people keep following you?". Brand IP sits on top of the brand as its personified expression.

| | Brand | Brand IP |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Name, logo, positioning, promise | Personality, stories, ongoing content |
| Relationship with people | Recognition and purchase | Following, interaction, emotional attachment |
| Form | Trademarks, visual identity, advertising | People, characters, series, accounts |
| Legal protection | Trademark and copyright | Depends on the form: real people involve name and image rights; characters and content involve copyright and trademarks |

Brand IP is also not the same as designing a mascot: a character is a starting point, and without steady content and operations few people will follow it; see [Companies & brands](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/ip/corporate).
