# How do talent management agencies work? A five-stage method

> MVP (Mega Volume Production, 十方众声) runs talent management through its Five-Stage Method: diagnose, position, develop, amplify and protect. It works with clients in three ways: full long-term management, one service, or one project. Every engagement starts with a diagnosis, a dedicated team runs the work after signing, and fees, contract length and exit terms are put in writing before you sign.

## What are the stages of MVP's personal branding framework?

MVP's Five-Stage Method has five stages: diagnose, position, develop, amplify and protect. If you are already established you can enter at a later stage, but everyone starts with the diagnosis, and you take part in every key decision.

1. **Diagnose**: See where things stand. MVP reviews who your audience is, how your content is doing, where the money comes from, which contracts you have signed and what the risks are, and gives you a diagnostic report with a list of what to do first. Which data that review rests on is set out [below](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/approach#data-sources).
2. **Position**: Answer who you are, who it is for and why you. MVP works out with you the core positioning, what you will and will not say in public and where the income should come from, and writes it up as a positioning plan; see [Brand strategy](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/services/strategy).
3. **Develop**: Turn the positioning into content and a public presence you can keep up. MVP sets up the content formats, team roles and publishing rhythm, tests them on a small scale, then adjusts.
4. **Amplify**: Reach more people and get better deals. MVP runs your accounts across platforms and brings in brand, media and industry partners, keeping an eye on how many deals you take and whether they fit you.
5. **Protect**: Keep what you have built. MVP watches for bad press and infringement, reviews contracts and commercial risk, and prepares response plans before anything happens.

## How do talent management agencies work with clients, and how does MVP?

MVP works with clients in three ways: full long-term management, where MVP looks after all five services; one service only, such as strategy or protection; or one project, such as a repositioning or a single commercial venture. Whichever you choose, and whether you are a founder or a creator looking at the influencer management process, it starts with the five steps below; how MVP charges is listed [below](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/approach#faq). The three ways of working and the five steps are how talent management works; a brand project starts from the same form, and how the brief, the proposal and the quote follow is on [Brand marketing](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/brands).

1. **Apply**: On the [Contact](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/contact) page, say who you are, which platforms you are on and what you want to solve. You don't have to give a real name yet, and no contracts or account data are needed at this stage.
2. **Initial review and reply**: MVP reads the application and replies, saying whether it makes sense to talk further. Every application gets a reply, including a "not now". Only the few people who review applications see yours, and neither the application nor the outcome is mentioned outside MVP.
3. **NDA, then a meeting**: Both sides sign an NDA before the first meeting, or earlier if you ask. In the meeting MVP learns where you are, what you want, which contracts you have and who is on your team; you can ask about its method and team.
4. **Diagnosis and proposal**: Once the diagnosis is done, MVP proposes a plan that sets out the way of working together, the scope, who does the work, how long it runs, what it costs and how to leave. The diagnosis is free.
5. **Sign and start**: Once the contract is signed, a dedicated team looks after you long-term, starts work under the Five-Stage Method and agrees regular reviews with you.

## What principles guide MVP's method?

MVP's method follows three principles.

- **Diagnosis before proposals**: MVP does not sell standard packages. Every piece of work starts with a diagnosis, and every plan states the problem to solve, how progress will be measured and how much time it needs.
- **Money and reputation together**: Every commercial deal is checked for fit and risk before signing. MVP will advise against a deal that conflicts with your positioning, even if it pays more.
- **You decide**: MVP advises and does the work, but you make the decisions on positioning, major deals and public statements; MVP does not use contract terms to decide for you.

## What does MVP look at when it assesses a personal brand?

MVP looks past follower count at three things: whether people can say in one sentence who you are, whether audiences and partners trust you, and whether your influence carries to other platforms and lasts over the years.

Each has signs you can see: what search engines and platforms suggest as people type your name; how an official platform index such as the [Douyin Index](https://trendinsight.oceanengine.com/) moves;[^1] what comments actually say; whether brands come back; and whether your income depends on one platform.

Risk counts too: one badly handled controversy can undo years of work. That is why MVP positions before it amplifies and keeps protection running throughout. How each service works is on [Talent management](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/services); how the approach differs by client type is on [Who we work with](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/ip).

## Which data should you trust when assessing a creator or public figure?

In one sentence: trust the platform's own back-end data, and treat screenshots and third-party estimates as reference only. From most to least reliable, there are four kinds of source.

1. **First-party data in the platform back end**: The most reliable. With the account holder's permission, look at the platform's own creator back end, such as the [Douyin Creator Center](https://creator.douyin.com/)[^2] and the [Xiaohongshu Creator Service Platform](https://creator.xiaohongshu.com/).[^3] Screenshots can be edited, so check against an export from the back end.
2. **Post-campaign data from official brand-deal platforms**: Just as reliable. For a deal a brand ordered through a platform's own brand-deal back end, such as Douyin's [Xingtu](https://www.xingtu.cn/),[^4] Xiaohongshu's [Pugongying](https://pgy.xiaohongshu.com/)[^5] or [Tencent Huxuan](https://huxuan.qq.com/),[^6] check the results in that back end after the campaign, not in a screenshot. Each platform's rules are on [Platform rules](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/platforms).
3. **Official platform indexes**: For trends only. With an index such as the [Douyin Index](https://trendinsight.oceanengine.com/),[^7] how one keyword rises and falls over time means something, but numbers from two different indexes cannot be compared.
4. **Third-party analytics platforms**: A cross-check only. Their figures are scraped and estimated, not the platform's own. The common ones and their limits are covered under [third-party creator analytics](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/glossary/third-party-analytics).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I work with MVP on just one service?

Yes. If you already have a team and are missing one thing, you can take just that, for example only [brand strategy](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/services/strategy) or [reputation and risk](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/services/protection). It can grow into full long-term management later if you need it.

### How does MVP charge?

Applying and the diagnosis are free. After that, it depends on who you are and what you need:

- **Creators and influencers**: no upfront fees of any kind, whether for signing, onboarding, training, development or packaging. MVP is paid only after a brand deal has actually earned money: its share is 15% to 30% and the rest is yours; the exact figure depends on the scope and is written into the contract. You see every item of income and cost.
- **Celebrities and artists, founders and professionals**: the fee for running your social media is tied to commercial income.
- **Companies**: priced by what the project needs and delivers.
- **One service or one project only**: a service fee for what the contract says will be delivered. Brand strategy is charged per project. Channel operations is a fixed service fee, or a fee plus a share, never a price per post. Partnerships (negotiating brand deals) are paid by commission or a share only once a deal is closed, with no introduction or service fee before that. Protection (bad press and infringement) is mainly an annual service; a one-off emergency is charged per project.
- **Brands (cross-border brand marketing)**: no published prices; quoted on request, see [Brand marketing](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/brands).

Whoever you are, four things hold:

- **You see the numbers before you decide**: the share or the fee, what it is calculated on (before or after platform fees and taxes) and how often accounts are settled are all in the proposal, item by item, before you sign. You can take the proposal and the contract away and go through them with your family, your team or a lawyer.
- **Nothing to pay if you do not sign**: applying and the diagnosis are free, and if you read the proposal and decide not to go ahead, you owe nothing.
- **No other charges**: MVP never charges in the name of signing, training or recruitment, and takes nothing that is not written in the contract.
- **The books are open**: a creator sees every item of income and cost on their deals.

The creators’ range is given above. For other work there is no single price because it differs so much: one client needs only brand deals negotiated, another needs a whole team running their channels for years, and one number would be wrong for both. The numbers come with the proposal: after the free diagnosis you get a proposal that states the share or the fee. Contracts usually run for two years; how to end one early is in the [FAQ](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/faq#working-together).

### What happens in the first months of working with MVP?

Diagnosis and positioning come first, not growth. After the first meeting, MVP runs the diagnosis free of charge, agrees the positioning with you, then tests the content on a small scale before doing more of it. The plan states what will be measured and how much time it needs; fees and contract terms are covered in the [FAQ](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/faq#working-together).

### How long does a contract with MVP last?

It depends on the way of working together, and it is written into the contract, with the exit conditions, before you sign. For full long-term management the length is agreed in the contract; a single service or a project follows the project's timeline. How it ends is covered in the [FAQ](https://www.mvpdata.net/en/faq#working-together).

### How is success measured when working with MVP?

By three things; follower count is a reference, never a promise:

- **The quality of your deals**: whether the brands that come fit your positioning, whether they come back, and whether your rates rise.
- **The right audience, and real engagement**: whether new followers are the people you want to reach; the engagement rate is likes, comments, saves and shares divided by views or reads, not by followers.
- **Reputation and risk**: over a period, the share of negative items among everything that mentions you.

The indicators are agreed in the plan and checked at every review. One caution: some reports convert coverage into "advertising money saved", known as advertising value equivalency (AVE), and the industry's own measurement principles do not accept it. The Barcelona Principles 4.0, from AMEC, the international association for communication measurement, state that such measures should not be used and that communication should be evaluated by its outcome and impact.[^8]

## Start with a diagnosis

Tell MVP where you stand and what you want to achieve, and book a diagnosis; it leads to a proposal that sets out the scope, the team, the term and the fees.
